CAUTION: You must remove the negative terminal from the battery. The wheels must be installed in the straight position. Failure to comply with these conditions may lead to a failure of the airbag system during further operation!
Pull the lever under the steering column down. Lower the steering column as far as possible and remove. Turn the lever under the steering column up, returning it to its original position. Remove the airbag from the steering wheel. Remove steering wheel. Remove the steering column switch cover. Remove steering column switches. Remove the footwell air duct located under the steering column. Disconnect connector -1-.
Remove cable duct -1- under steering column. To do this, slightly pry off the retaining lug -arrow- and pull the cable duct out of the steering column guide.
Remove nuts -arrows- and remove footwell trim -1-.
Loosen bolt -1- and remove universal joint -2- from steering gear shaft.
Remove earth cable -arrow- and cable -1- from steering column. Loosen bolts -2-.
Unscrew bolt -1- and remove roll cage element for clutch pedal -2-. Remove bolt -3- and remove roll cage element for brake pedal -4-. Lower the steering column slightly, then carefully lift it up.
Installation
Hang the steering column on the support bracket using the access holes -arrows A-. Align the steering column with the support bracket. Install the steering column on the support bracket. In doing so, the pins -1- of the support bracket must fit into the holes -arrows B- on the steering column housing. This is the only way to ensure that the steering column is correctly positioned in relation to the support bracket.
Screw in and tighten bolts -2- for steering column.
Fit clutch pedal roll cage element -2- and secure with bolt -1-. Reinstall the safety cage element for the brake pedal -4- and secure it with the bolt -3-. Screw earth cable -arrow- onto steering column and install cable -1-. Fit cardan joint -2- onto steering gear shaft and tighten bolt -1-. Fit footwell trim -1- and secure with nuts -arrows-. Install the cable duct located under the steering column. The retainer -arrow- must snap into place in the guide. Connect connector -1-. Install the footwell air duct located under the steering column. Install steering column switches, Install steering column switch trim. Install steering wheel. Install the airbag on the steering wheel. Carry out basic setting of steering angle sender -G85- using tester -VAS 5051B-.

Cardan joint to the steering shaft. Use only new bolt | 30 Nm |
Steering column to support bracket | 20 Nm |
After carrying out the following work, the basic setting of the steering angle sender G85 must be checked: after removing or replacing the steering angle sender -G85-, after removing or replacing the steering column; after removing or replacing the steering gear; after changing the angular position of the steering wheel on the steering shaft.
Checking the steering column for damage
Check for external damage to steering column parts. Turning the steering column shaft, make sure that there is no jamming, excessive resistance during rotation. Check the possibility of adjusting the steering column in length and height.
