Drain
ATTENTION: When opening the expansion tank, hot steam can escape from it, so the tank cap should be covered with a rag and unscrewed very carefully, gradually relieving pressure.
Open coolant reservoir cap. Remove the sound absorbing tray. Detach coolant hoses -1- from coolant circulation pump -V178- -2-.
Remove retaining clip -arrow- for lower coolant hose and disconnect coolant hose from radiator (quick connector).
To drain the coolant from the engine, also disconnect the coolant hose from the oil cooler -arrow-.
Refueling
Caution: Only tap water may be used to obtain coolant. Water from artesian wells and wells does not have the qualities necessary to create a good coolant.
Note: Only G12 plus-plus, which complies with TL VW 774 G, may be used as a concentrate. G 12 plus-plus concentrate prevents damage due to freezing of the coolant, corrosion and scaling. In addition, it raises the boiling point of the coolant. For this reason, the cooling system, regardless of the time of year, must be charged with concentrates. In countries with tropical climates and high engine loads, high boiling point coolant plays a significant role in ensuring reliable engine operation. The freezing point of the coolant must not exceed -25°C (in countries with an arctic climate - no higher than -35°С). Do not add water to the coolant (reducing in it, thus, the proportion of concentrate) even in the warm season or in countries with a warm climate. The proportion of concentrate in the coolant must be at least 40%. If, due to climatic conditions, the freezing point of the coolant must be lowered, the proportion of G12 Plus-plus concentrate can be increased, but not more than 60% (freezing temperature in this case will be about -40°C). If this limit is exceeded, the freezing point will rise again and, in addition, the heat capacity of the coolant will decrease. When replacing the radiator, heater heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket, the drained coolant must not be reused. Refractometer -T10007- is recommended for determining the coolant density. Recommended mixing ratios: (use only tap water).
Connect the lower coolant hose to the radiator and secure it with the retaining clip. Connect coolant hoses to oil cooler and coolant circulation pump -V178-. Install sound absorbing tray.
With cooling system filling tool -VAS 6096-
Screw adapter -VAG 1274/8- onto expansion tank. Fill cooling system with tool -VAS 6096-.
Without cooling system filling tool -VAS 6096-
Slowly fill in coolant up to the upper mark on the expansion tank. Close expansion tank. Start the engine and let it run for about 3 minutes at about 2000 rpm. Let the engine idle until the radiator fan comes on. Check the coolant level and top up if necessary. When the engine is warmed up to operating temperature, the coolant level should be at the upper mark, with a cold engine - between the upper and lower marks, in the middle of the shaded field.
