WARNING: Risk of scalding from hot steam and hot coolant. When the engine is hot, the fluid in the cooling system is under pressure.
Open the coolant expansion tank cap. Remove soundproofing. Remove bolt -2- on bracket for coolant overrun pump -V51-.
Note: Coolant overrun pump -U51- remains in installation position.
Remove coolant hose -1-.
Detach lower coolant hose to coolant overrun pump -V51- -arrow- and drain off coolant.
Vehicles with auxiliary heater
Detach coolant hoses -arrows- and drain off remaining coolant.
Refueling
Caution: Only potable water may be used for mixing. Contaminated water does not have the necessary quality parameters to ensure the working properties of the coolant.
Note: Only G12 plus-plus, which complies with TL VW 774 G, may be used as a concentrate "according to CTLVW774 F" prevent freezing of the coolant and the formation of corrosion and scale. In addition, they increase the boiling point of the coolant. For this reason, the cooling system, regardless of the time of year, must be filled with additives. In countries with tropical climates and high engine loads, high boiling point coolant plays a significant role in ensuring reliable engine operation. The freezing point of the coolant must be at least -25°C (in countries with an arctic climate - not less than -35°С). Do not add water to the coolant (reducing in it, thus, the proportion of concentrate) even in the warm season or in countries with a warm climate. The proportion of concentrate in the coolant should not be less than 40%. If, due to climatic conditions, the freezing point must be lowered, the proportion of concentrate can be increased, but not more than 60% (freezing temperature in this case will be about -40°C). If this limit is exceeded, the freezing point will rise again and, in addition, the heat capacity of the coolant will decrease. When replacing the radiator, heater heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket, the drained coolant must not be reused. Recommended mixing ratios.
Connect coolant hose -1- to radiator from below. Remove air duct. Connect coolant hose to coolant overrun pump -V51- -arrow-.
Freezing point up to | Share of concentrate | G12 plus-plus 1) | Water 1) 2) |
-25°C | 40% | 3.2 l | 4.8 l |
-35°C | 50% | 4.0 l | 4.0 l |
- 1) The volume of coolant may vary depending on the vehicle equipment.
- 2) Use only clean drinking water.
Vehicles with auxiliary heater
Connect coolant hoses -arrows-. Install soundproofing.
All
With cooling system filling tool -VAS 6096-
Screw expansion tank adapter -VAG 1274/8- onto expansion tank. Fill the cooling system using the cooling system filling tool -VAS 6096-.
Without cooling system filling tool -VAS 6096-
Slowly fill in coolant up to the upper mark on the expansion tank. Close expansion tank. Start the engine and let it run for about 3 minutes at about 2000 rpm. Leave the engine running until the radiator fan -V7- is switched on.
CAUTION: Opening the expansion tank may cause hot steam to escape.
Check the coolant level and top up if necessary. When the engine is warmed up to operating temperature, the coolant level should be at the upper mark, with a cold engine - between the upper and lower marks, in the middle of the shaded field.
