Replacing valve stem seals

NOTE: With cylinder head installed.

Remove the camshaft.

Remove the poppet lifters and lay them with the working surface down. Do not swap poppet pushers.

Move the piston of the corresponding cylinder to the TDC position.

Install 2036 Valve Mounting Tool and Support with Spacer Bolts (pic. 2.220).



Remove the valve springs using the valve spring removal lever VW 541/ 1 A and the VW 541/ 5 tool.

NOTE: The valves rest on the bottom of the piston.

Pull off the valve stem seals using the 3047 A puller (pic. 2.221).

Installation

Put the plastic cover A included in the repair kit on the appropriate valve stem (pic. 2.222). This will help prevent damage to the new valve stem seal B.



Install a new valve stem seal into drift 3129.

Lubricate the sealing lip of the valve stem and carefully place it on the valve guide.

Install the camshaft.
