NOTE: When installing the camshafts, the cams for the first cylinder must point up.
Work order
Before installing, grease the mating surfaces of bearing caps 7 and 8 with a small amount of grease G 052 723 A2 (pic. 2.75).
Insert the support elements into the cylinder head and install the appropriate roller arms on the ends of the valve stems and their supports.
Make sure that all roller levers 1 are correctly attached to the ends of the valve stems and clipped into the appropriate support element 2 (pic. 2.76).
Lubricate the working surface of the camshafts with engine oil.
Carefully insert the appropriate camshaft into the cylinder head camshaft bearings. At the same time, check the marking of the camshafts.
NOTE: Observe the mounting position of the bearing caps.
The toes of the bearing caps A of the intake and exhaust camshafts point outward.
The bearing cap markings are visible from the intake camshaft side (pic. 2.77).
Intake camshaft
Screw on bearing caps 5 and 9, alternating crosswise, and tighten with a tightening torque of 5 Nm + tighten by 1/8 turn. (45°).
Install bearing caps 1 and 13 and tighten to 5 Nm and 1/8 turn (45°).
Fit bearing cap 7 and tighten to 5 Nm and 1/8 turn (45°).
Install bearing caps 3 and 11 and also tighten to 5 Nm and 1/8 turn (45°).
Exhaust camshaft
Screw on bearing caps 6 and 10, alternating crosswise, and tighten with a tightening torque of 5 Nm + tighten by 1/8 turn. (45°).
Install bearing caps 2 and 14 and tighten to 5 Nm and 1/8 turn (45°).
Fit bearing cap 8 and tighten to 5 Nm and 1/8 turn (45°).
Fit bearing caps 4 and 12 and also tighten to 5 Nm and 1/8 turn (45°).
Continuation for both camshafts
Set the camshafts in the cylinder head to TDC cyl. 1.
Camshaft ruler T10068 A must fit into both grooves.
Check the timing cover strainer for dirt before installation.
Before installing the timing cover, lightly lubricate the mating surfaces of the camshaft seals in the timing cover with engine oil.
Lightly grease the mating surfaces of the lip seals on the camshafts and slowly slide the timing cover onto the lip seals of the camshafts.
Install timing cover (pic. 2.77) and tighten the bolts to 8 Nm.
Valve timing adjustment
Clean the 3 mm holes in the cylinder head gasket from any old sealant.
NOTE: With the cylinder head installed, the holes in the cylinder head gasket are only half visible.
Fill 3 mm holes in the cylinder head gasket with AMV 174 004 01 sealant and apply a little more sealant at these points.
NOTE: AMV 174 004 01 sealant hardens quickly.
Lubricate the oil channel O-ring with engine oil and insert it into the side cover along with the oil seal.
Lubricate the seating surface on the side cover with AMV 176 501 sealant and install it immediately.
Insert all fixing bolts first and tighten them slightly.
Then tighten the M8 bolts to 23 Nm, then the M6 bolts to 8 Nm.
Install the timing chain tensioner and tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 40 Nm.
Install the cylinder head cover and intake manifold.
Disassembly and assembly of the timing cover
Check the strainer in the timing cover for dirt.
Unclip the strainer 2 from the reverse side of the timing cover 1 and remove any dirt (pic. 2.79).
