NOTE: If it is necessary to replace the engine control unit, connect the diagnostic tester VAS 5051B and perform the guided function «Motorsteuergeraet ersetzen/ Replacing the control unit».
Removing
Switch off the ignition.
Remove the wiper arms.
Remove the plenum box cover.
NOTE: Shear screw threads are thread varnished. By heating the shear screws with a hair dryer, the binding effect of the thread varnish is reduced.
CAUTION: To avoid fire damage, cover wires, plugs and control boxes near the engine control box.
Make settings for hair dryer 4, as shown in Figure 2.284.
Turn the temperature adjustment potentiometer 2 to the maximum heating power (600°С).
Set the two-stage air quantity switch 3 to position 3.
WARNING: Due to the heat of the shear screws, parts of the protective housing will also become very hot, to avoid injury, wear protective gloves.
Point the hair dryer nozzle at the shear screw.
Turn on the hair dryer and heat the screw head for about 20-25 seconds.
Remove the shear screw with 2 pliers behind the head.
The method of unscrewing the second screw is similar.
Remove cover 1 from the control box (pic. 2.285).
Move the locks of plugs 1 on the engine control unit to the edges and disconnect both plugs (pic. 2.286).
Remove the engine control unit.
Installation
Insert the engine control unit into the mounting frame in the plenum chamber.
Connect the plugs to the engine control unit and slide the latches 1 towards the middle.
Place cover 1 on the engine control unit and screw in new shear screws by hand (pic. 2.287).
Tighten the new shear screws evenly until the heads are sheared off.
Install the plenum box cover.
Install the wiper arms.
