Checking the brake fluid level in the expansion tank
The brake fluid expansion tank is located under the hood. It has two chambers, one for each brake circuit. The screw plug has an air outlet, which must always be free from dirt.
The expansion tank is transparent so that the brake fluid level can be observed at any time from the outside. In addition, on the VW T4, a warning light on the instrument panel indicates that the brake fluid level is too low. However, from time to time it is still necessary to look at the expansion tank.
1. The brake fluid level must be between the MAX and MIN·marks.
2. Fill only with new brake fluid, specification FMVSS 116 DOT 4.
3. As a result of brake pad wear, the brake fluid level drops slightly, this is normal. If the brake fluid level is slightly above the MIN·mark, there is no need to add fluid, although the lower limit of the level has been reached.
4. If the brake fluid level drops sharply within a short period of time, then this indicates a brake fluid leak. The location of the leak must be found. As a rule, these are worn cuffs of brake cylinders. Based on safety conditions, it is better to entrust the system tightness check to the service station.
