Note. Only petrol engine.
Special Tool Required: Spark Plug Wrench, available from Automotive Auxiliary Store. Candles have a turnkey hexagon 20.8 mm. Additionally, it is recommended to purchase special pliers, for example, HAZET 1849, which facilitate the removal of the candle tip.
It is necessary to purchase, depending on the number of cylinders, 4 or 5 spark plugs (see subsection 2.14.7.2).
Removing
1. In order to get to the candles, it is necessary to tilt the radiator with the grille forward. Unscrew 4 fixing screws (arrows).
2. Then lift the radiator by the handle and fold it forward (arrows).
3. Disconnect all spark plug tips, not by the cable, but by the tip. The pliers mentioned above will facilitate removal.
4. Blow out, if possible, the niches of the candles with compressed air so that dirt does not get into the candle hole.
5. Unscrew the spark plugs with a spark plug wrench, only when the engine is warm to the touch, and check their condition (so-called "candle face"). With some experience, you can immediately draw conclusions about the operational state of the engine. In this case, there are the following rules for determining the operational state of the engine by the color and condition of the electrodes and insulators:
- from light brown to light gray - the correct operation of the candles and the correct mixture;
- black - the mixture is over-enriched;
- light gray - the mixture is depleted;
- oiled - the corresponding spark plug does not work or the piston rings are worn (check compression).
Installation
1. Check by eye the same gap between the 3 electrodes and the ground electrode. For new spark plugs, the distance between the electrodes is usually less than the specified one.
2. If necessary, adjust the gap by carefully bending the earth electrode with light side impacts. For bending, do not use a screwdriver, resting it against the edge of the thread, and in no case against the central electrode, in order to avoid damaging it.
3. Clean the spark plug threads with a clean rag.
4. Screw in the spark plugs by hand as far as they will go.
Attention! Do not twist spark plugs when screwing in.
5. Tighten spark plugs to 25 Nm.
Attention! If you don't have a torque wrench handy, tighten the new spark plugs about 90° (1/4 turn). Tighten old spark plugs only 15°. Spark plugs that are too tight can shear off or damage the threads in the cylinder head when unscrewing. In this case, repair the spark plug threads with VTC or Heli-Cjil tips.
6. Put on the spark plug tips in the order in which the cylinders fire. The order of operation for a 4-cylinder engine: 1–3–4–2; 5-cylinder engine: 1-2-4-5-3.
7. Move from side to side to check the reliability of fastening of spark plug tips and cables.
